I found myself wandering the street markets of Rio de Janeiro, not really shopping but more there to take in the local atmosphere. I passed by vendors selling everything from t-shirts to smartphones to snacks, and also one guy who tried to sell me a little frog (like, a live frog—not some souvenir knick-knack).
I stopped in front of a fruit vendor—a little old man who had been weathered by the sun. All I wanted to do was catch my breath and get my bearings, but then our eyes met and he flashed me a huge, silly grin. Right then a group of teenagers ambled by with music blasting from a phone.
The old man came alive. He popped up from his stool and began dancing, inching toward me in a deliberate maneuver. He danced around me, which was kind of awkward yet mildly entertaining, and then grabbed a couple of mangoes off his cart to use as props.
He had two mangoes, which he used sometimes as tits and sometimes as testicles. It sounds pervy, but he pulled it off and made it really funny. He danced all around me with his mangoes, sometimes as tits and sometimes as testicles, and sometimes he’d act confused like he wasn’t sure which he was holding. Now that I’m reading this I’m thinking you might have had to be there to understand the hilarity. Everyone laughed, including me.
And then the song ended and everyone around applauded, including the teenagers. The old man took a bow toward me and said “Thank you, pretty lady.”
And then I bought a couple of his sweet, delicious mangoes.
