So some friends and I visited Jeju Island off the southern coast of Korea. We only had a couple of days before moving on to Japan so we tried to cram in as much as possible while we were there. On one of those days we decided to climb a mountain and then visit a “traditional” village, which was basically a tourist trap with a bunch of "traditional" statues and fortune tellers.
Exhaustion set in by the end of the day, and all we wanted to do was eat some good food and get trashed on soju. We stopped in a small mom-and-pop restaurant, drawn in by the aroma of food more than anything. The lady who ran the place didn’t speak much English, but she figured out that we had a strenuous day. Maybe it was the way we trudged around like zombies, or maybe it was our stench from being outside in the heat all day. She insisted that we drink some of her homemade tea—a smooth brew with a light dance of ginger in it.
I don’t know if the tea was magic or what, but it rejuvenated our entire group. We came back alive and then ate like royalty, thanking our hostess the best we could in our broken Korean.
And then we got trashed on soju because… well… Korea.
