I was 10 when my family decided to take a trip to Egypt. Part of it involved a cruise down the Nile. Before we departed I spent a lot of time reading stories and brochures about the pyramids, and also about the legendary Cleopatra.

The Nile took my breath away, striking me with awe that the winding blue line that I had traced on maps with my fingertip was, in person, as massive as a sea. My head swam as we boarded the riverboat, and I couldn’t help but to stare out at the mirrored water as I shuffled on-board behind my parents.

My parents stopped abruptly and I bumped into my mom’s butt. I looked up to see them handing our tickets to a woman, and I couldn’t help but gasp with surprise. The lady checking our tickets had the most luxurious black hair that cascaded around her dark almond complexion. Deep brown eyes shone from her face with little glints of light dancing within as if she knew some secret joy that others could never understand, and she held her head high atop her shoulders as if she understood the majesty that she carried with her.

“Are you Cleopatra?” I asked. I knew then that it was a stupid question—Cleopatra had been dead for over a millennium. But seeing this woman made me believe in that moment that the great pharaoh indeed lived, and spent her time taking tickets for a riverboat cruise.

“She’s so cute,” the lady said, and my parents chuckled before ushering me on-board. I snapped back into reality. The woman was not Cleopatra, but she carried Cleopatra’s essence with her and she made me want to carry that essence as well.
