I started my adventures in business the same way as many little girls: with a lemonade stand.
"Little girl" isn't exactly accurate, seeing as how I was twelve at the time and savvy enough to understand the real world around me. I set my stand up by the picnic table my family reserved for the Memorial Day concert.
I thought a hot day would make for brisk sales, so I couldn’t figure out why we couldn’t move product. Did we not give enough ice? Did I price too high. Was no one thirsty?
My epiphany came after a guy bought a cup and then proceeded to slosh some of it out on the ground.
“How dare he waste my delicious lemonade,” I thought, even though I only used a cheap powdered mix. But then what I saw next convinced me to change my business model.
They guy went back to his lawn chair and pulled a little bottle out form his backpack and poured some into the lemonade. Alcohol. He needed a mixer for his alcohol. Adults like alcohol. And the only thing adults like better than alcohol is… more alcohol.
I took note of where my customers went. And I followed them. I mean, I didn’t stalk them, but I set up a tray to carry lemonade so I could deliver straight to the consumer.
It worked. And in the process I also learned that when adults drink alcohol, they begin tipping. And the more they drink, the more likely they tip.
By the end of the night I had made so much money that I had to hide some of the cash from my parents just so they wouldn’t get too suspicious about where it came from.
That day I learned that lemonade is lovely, but booze is better.
